Coloring books, especially for adults have been trending lately, and if you’re wanting to get into that trend I’m going to show you a few ways you can get started making your own coloring book. It’s up to you whether to want make it a fun side project or a profitable one.
If you’re not sure where to start, feel free to take a look at what other people are doing. There are plenty of coloring apps, coloring books, coloring pages all over the internet you can take a peek at.
The most popular themes for coloring pages are: animals, plants, scenery, mandalas, and butterflies. Within these images are patterns. You want your coloring page to be filled with as many lines as possible. It’s much for fun to color on a page with a lot of little nooks and crannies to color in. Unless you’re making coloring pages for small children, they typically don’t care to color in the lines anyway. Mandalas are great for this because they’re easy and fun to draw, and you’ll end up with a lot of space for coloring. The image shown here is an example.
The traditional way to create the art for a coloring book is with good old fashion paper and pen. You can either sketch out the design with pencil, trace with ink on a light-box, or you can simply erase the pencil after inking over it. If you want a better-looking end result, it’s better to use a light-box. I would also suggest using a good liner with archival ink.
Once you’re done with the line art, you’ll want to scan the image in and edit it. Usually when you scan art on paper, you will need to edit the image. Make sure the blacks are dark and the whites are bright.
My personal favorite way to get nice, clean line art is to scan the image in and use image trace on Adobe Illustrator CC. Or you can use the pen tool to make your own vector line art, but that way is much more time consuming.
If you want to make a coloring book for your own personal use, you can use Etsy to purchase coloring book pages to download and print. Most likely the owner will not want you using their images if you plan on selling them in a book, so only use this is you’re making a personal coloring book.
If you own an iPad, (and iPad pro with an Apple pencil recommended), you can download the Amaziograph app to make mandalas which are very popular for coloring pages. If that’s not your thing, you can use the Procreate app to make beautiful digital line art.
If you are making your coloring pages for fun you can: scan and print your pages, hole-punch them and place them in a binder. You can also stitch the pages or staple them together. You can also use your own images on apps like Colorfy to color you images on your tablet.
If you want to make money with your coloring pages you can: Sell your coloring pages on Etsy for download, or you can contact art directors for coloring books and coloring apps. There’s also self-publication options if you wish to put your coloring book on the market. You can use Createspace to self-publish and Amazon to sell.
